There are hundreds of millions of cat lovers all around the world. And that’s because cats are very special animals with grace, intelligence and general beauty that many consider to be unmatched. People have lived with cats for thousands of years, more on that in this article: Brief Cat And Human History, and we have helped each other in many ways. However, different cats have different characteristics and are special in different ways. We’ve already covered the World’s Deadliest Cat, now it’s time to discuss the world’s smallest cat.
The world’s smallest cat’s title goes to – the rusty spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus). These cats, when fully grown, reach 0.8 to 1.6 kg or 1.8 to 3.5 lbs. They are also, on average, 35 to 48 cm or 14 to 19 inches in length. A grown rusty spotted cat can easily fit in most people’s hands.
What they lack in size they make up for in agility, speed, overall athleticism, very curious nature and eyeshight which is about 6 times better than ours.
Rusty spotted cats have short grey fur over most of their bodies with rusty spots over their backs and flanks, hence their name. They also have underbelies that are white with large dark spots and they have six dark streaks on each side of their heads, extending over their cheeks and forehead.
Location and Population
Rusty spotted cats live only in India and Sri Lanka. They prefer to live in forests, areas with dense vegetation and rocky areas as well as scrub and grasslands. They also prefer to live in trees and are classified as arboreal species. There are about 10,000 rusty spotted cats living in the wild, and while they aren’t considered endagered, they are considered to be at risk of becoming endagered. Like most wild cats, rusty spotted cat populations are decreasing, largely due to habitat loss and hunting for fur and even meat.
Can They Be Domesticated?
Yes, rusty spotted cats can be tamed and some people do jus that. They also appear to be very playful and affectionate.
These kitties are carnivores who tend to eat small rodents, insects, frogs, small birds and small reptiles. They tend to hunt at night and are nocturnal creatures. There are also reports of them preying on domesticated poultry leading to cat-human conflicts.
